Teams or Google Classroom?

Date: 11.03.2026

Do you Teams or do you Classroom? Ok, we can't really verb the use of these tools like we do fo Google - thankfully. But which is better for school use? If your school uses one, but is still wondering whether it's the right choice, here's what everyone else is doing.

We surveyed 700 teachers in primary and secondary schools recently to ask them which of these (and other) tools they use, and for what.

Microsoft Teams is the most widely used platform at 55.03%, followed by Google Classroom at 38.48% with numerous other tools being used for more specialised jobs.

Teams is mainly used for communication with teachers or parents, but it's also used widely (though less frequently, day to day) to set work for absent pupilsSetting homework and providing feedback are also signifcant uses of Teams.

Meanwhile, Google Classroom is used more frequently for setting homework and in-class work compared to Microsoft Teams.

Which do teachers prefer? Aside from the much greater use of Teams to communicate, the differences in usage above are pretty small really, suggesting that both tools work fairly well. On a scale of 1- 5, Google Classroom received a slightly higher average utility score of 3.27, compared to 3.12 for Microsoft Teams -so not much in it.

Key Takeaways for Decision Makers

Google Classroom for Instruction: Teacher favour Google Classroom for student-facing tasks, particularly for setting homework and in-class work. It also holds a slight lead in providing feedback and managing independent learning for absent pupils.

Microsoft Teams for Communication: Teams is significantly more popular for communication with teachers or parents, nearly tripling the usage rate of Google Classroom in this area.

Organisational Integration: Qualitative feedback suggests Teams is frequently viewed as a "remote server" or "primary file saving area" for staff. It is widely used for department admin, trust communication, and professional collaboration.

Performance Tracking: Both platforms show low adoption for tracking pupil performance and progress (under 6%), suggesting that schools may be using specialized MIS (Management Information Systems) like Bromcom or Insight for these specific data needs.
