Review rating:
How well does it match the curriculum?
Well: It covers the curriculum as well as we expected
National Curriculum objectives covered but some in a very abstract way for younger children
How well does it support your school’s inclusion/diversity/equal opportunities policy?
Well: The content is inclusive and sensitively presented
Good for children to be exposed to diverse materials - e.g. reference to Native Tribes in Y4
How well does it support differentiation for the full range of the classes you use it with?
Reasonably: Very abstract for lower ability learners and introduces too much technical vocabulary for them without explanation.
Challenge for most able pupils is evident.
How well does it engage and motivate pupils?
Reasonably: In classes with a high % of pupils with SEND, pupils are easily disengaged with the materials. Needs a greater level of support for inexperienced teachers to deliver the materials effectively.
How well supported is it by accompanying formative assessments?
Reasonably: There is some formative assessment included, but its usefulness is a bit limited
Have created our own formative assessment materials.
How well does it support planning?
Badly: It takes a lot of time or additional resources to use it in the classroom
Great for expert teachers with a geography degree but others struggle to deliver the materials without senior leader coaching.
How well does it support home use / independent learning?
Badly: It’s not really suitable for home use or independent learning
In a deprived community with limited parent/ cater support at home, the materials are too complex and require further explanation.
How would you rate it for value for money compared to similar resources?
Reasonably: It represents about the same value for money as similar resources I’ve seen.
It’s a starting point at the very least.
