Review subject: RE

Phase: Primary

Reviewer: Karen, RE coordinator

Reviewer’s school profile:

  • LA maintained school 370 pupils in Birmingham
  • Ofsted rating: Requires improvement
  • FSM: 73.5%

Review rating:

The scheme is too wordy, staff feedback is that it takes too long to read through when lesson planning, they prefer more concise planning to follow

How well does it match the curriculum?

Reasonably: It’s good enough for the money, but needs some additional resources

It does match the curriculum but the lessons could be more interesting and interactive

How well does it support your school’s inclusion/diversity/equal opportunities policy?

Reasonably: There is some representation of minorities and no real stereotyping

The content does cover the different world religions, although some more than others

How well does it support differentiation for the full range of the classes you use it with?

Reasonably: There could be some more challenging content which encourages higher thinking skills

How well does it engage and motivate pupils?

Badly: Pupils don’t really enjoy using it

Pupils don’t find the content engaging at all and neither do staff

How well supported is it by accompanying formative assessments?

Badly: There isn’t any / enough formative assessment or what there is, isn’t very useful

As far as I’m aware it doesn’t include assessment materials. I've never seen any

How well does it support planning?

Reasonably: Mostly we can use it without an unreasonable amount of effort or additional resource requirement

The lessons are very wordy, the planning folders are thick and contain too much, it’s difficult to find the objectives and teaching ideas quickly

How well does it support home use / independent learning?

Badly: It’s not really suitable for home use or independent learning

It isn’t suitable for home learning

How would you rate it for value for money compared to similar resources?

Badly: It really isn’t worth investing the time or money in introducing this resource at a school like mine.

I’ve seen and used better
