Review rating:
The only downside is that I never manage to get through the whole unit as lessons often take more than one session. So I am selective about which sessions I use.
How well does it match the curriculum?
Brilliantly: There is more content (eg support / extension activities) than we expected
The quality of texts used is outstanding and engages the children brilliantly.
How well does it support your school’s inclusion/diversity/equal opportunities policy?
Brilliantly: The content stands out as being particularly positive in this regard and would be welcome in any school like mine
Books are added regularly with inclusion in mind. For example Happy Here for this year's BHM
How well does it support differentiation for the full range of the classes you use it with?
It is up to the teacher to differentiate.
How well does it engage and motivate pupils?
Well: Pupils generally enjoy using it and tend to welcome doing so
Again, it allows a certain amount of freedom and interpretation for the teacher in how they deliver the lessons
How well supported is it by accompanying formative assessments?
Reasonably: There is some formative assessment included, but its usefulness is a bit limited
There are no assessments but we are able to produce extended writing pieces for this purpose
How well does it support planning?
Brilliantly: It has everything you could need and is straightforward to use with classes
There is extensive material for planning
How well does it support home use / independent learning?
Well: Pupils could be expected to use this at home or independently, with a minimum amount of support or additional resources
The Take 5 material was extremely helpful for this and during lockdown
