Teacher recruitment in non-EBacc subjects only 2/3 of requirement

Date: 03.12.2018
DfE stats show that there were 29,255 new entrants to postgraduate ITT courses in the academic year 2018 to 2019. Compared to academic year 2017 to 2018, there were 2,110 more postgraduate new entrants to ITT overall.

EBacc subjects have attracted only 89% of the target, but the real shortfall is in the non-EBacc subjects, where only 65% of the target has been met. This will compound difficulties in these subjects in schools, which are already struggling with lower student numbers at GCSEand A-level, and so suffer reduced funding.

D&T is very much a subject in decline in schools and the situation looks dire for teacher recruitment too, with only 25% of the target being met. Physics stands at 47%.

Biology is the most popular subject, having recruited 153% of the requirement, with PE, history and English also being over-subscribed.

Primary recruitment is fine, though at 103% of need.
