Music: State of PlayDate: 07.04.2019
The Musician's Union report, State of Play, adds to the already extensive body of research which suggests that music in schools is severly under the cosh. In its research among music teachers it found that:
- 73.5% were either completely unfamiliar with the plan or had not read the National Plan for Music Education (NPME), published by the government in 2011
- Only 2.8% of respondents expressed any degree of confidence at all in the current government's handling music education
- Only 4.7% considered that EBacc is having any kind of positive impact on music education
...and so on.
The report provides a detailed review of the state of music in the curriculum - primary schools are less affected by funding, curriculum and policy change than are secondary schools, but there is a lot of detail in the report. Note that it's based on the responses of just 179 classroom teachers however, so some of the detail needs to be considered carefully.
