Paper 1 - August 2009
The use of free resources in schools
The explosion of free, high quality multi-media resources produced by charities and not-for-profit organistions is changing the face of publishing, and the use of these resources by teachers is ubiquitous. For commercial publishers, this has major implications – although little is known about how these resources are being used. Find out:
- Which charities’ resources are most widely used, and why.
- The subject areas teachers are most likely to resource using free resources, and whether this is driven by supply or demand.
- Information about how teachers and students are using free resources to support teaching and learning at school and at home.
- How teachers find out about free resources, and how marketing campaigns should ensure that they target the right person.
- Shifts in behaviours linked to take-up and usage of resources over past two year period, linked to changes in the curriculum, government policy and new initiatives.
This research paper analyses data submitted by over 600 primary and secondary teachers, and where possible, maps this against responses gathered during previous research.

Paper 2 - November 2009
Marketing channels to schools
Getting marketing messages across to teachers is becoming increasingly difficult – so what is the most effective way of letting your customers know about new resources, special offers and product trials?
Schoolzone will be recruiting a panel of 20 primary and secondary school headteachers, deputies and SMT members, and setting up an online discussion forum in which we’ll be asking questions about how and when to communicate with them, what works, what doesn’t, and how organisations should maximise their marketing budget.
The forum will run for five days, and clients who buy into this in advance will have the opportunity to view the forum, and submit questions to Schoolzone for posting on the site.
The data will be coded, summarised, analysed and reported on, with key findings and recommendations outlined in a summary overview – ideal for senior managers and decision makers.

Paper 3- Annual study, VLEs and LPs The impact
in UK Schools - December 2009
Are VLEs delivering on their potential to transform the way in which schools buy into, use, personalise and create materials? Which VLEs are most widely used, and how are teachers using them?
How often are teachers and pupils using their VLE, and where and when do they access it? Is the format in which content is made available influencing teachers’ purchasing decisions?
These are just some of the issues that will be addressed in our third annual survey to primary and secondary school teachers about takeup and use of VLEs in and out of the classroom, and at home. Many ‘core’ questions track and compare data gathered in 2007 and 2008, while new questions allow more recent issues and initiatives to be reviewed.
